With 81% of grade pupils unable to read for meaning, South Africa has the worst reading proficiency in the entire globe. This is reported by the 2021 Progress in International Reading Literacy Study, which evaluated 12,426 pupils nationwide and contrasted their results with pupils of the same age in 42 other countries.
